Hundreds attend a vigil in Dearborn Heights to mourn the loss a of a 15-year-old student.

Mohammed Wutwut drowned in Cass Lake over the weekend.  He was a student and athlete at Star International Academy in Dearborn Heights.

On Monday, the school held a vigil in Wutwut’s memory. Hundreds of students, teachers, friends and family gathered on the football field with candles in hand.

"This is really what it is all about about coming together, supporting one another, sharing feelings, sharing sorrows, and being there for each other,” said Star Academy Superintendent, Nawal Hamadeh.

Wutwut is described as a talented and loving young man, who made an impact on many lives.

He was also a star football player for the team.

"It was his work ethic, his drive to get better, his goal was to hopefully play college football and maybe beyond that,” said his coach, Nicholas Margo.

The football players will be some of the students who feel the loss of Wutwut the most.

"This field will be a remembrance of him and what he meant to us,” said Margo.

Wutwut drowned in Cass Lake on Saturday.  He went under and never resurfaced.

Dive teams searched for hours, his body was eventually recovered early Sunday morning.

The sudden and tragic loss is devastating to the community.

"We want to do this for the kids to really be there for them it’s been a very tragic and devastating experience for all of us,” said Hamadeh.

There will be grief counselors available to students during summer school hours.
