Police are issuing a crime alert for residents in Southgate. A car was stolen during a rash of break-ins over the holiday weekend.
Southgate police said all of the incidents happened in a neighborhood behind the MJR Movie Theater off Peach Street.
Police tell 7 Action News there were about five break-ins where the suspect or suspects rummaged through vehicles and one where a black 2015 Ford Taurus was stolen.
In all of the incidents, the cars were left unlocked. An important reminder, according to Southgate police, because as the season changes, the potential for crimes like this go up.
The Ford Taurus belonged to Southgate resident, Brittany Simmons.
"I came outside to grab my cooler this morning and I had unloaded my groceries last night and I must have forgotten to lock my car, and it was gone,” said Simmons.
Simmons and her two kids were expecting to leave for the Memorial Day holiday, but their plans were shattered when they found an empty driveway.
"Somebody robbed me, 20 feet from where my children are sleeping,” said Simmons.
She said along with her car, her and her two children’s peace of mind was stolen. She said her daughter took the news the hardest.
"She's eight, she doesn't understand why somebody would want to steal her library books, because her backpack was in my car,” said Simmons.
Simmons does have insurance, but she’s hopeful her car is found and the suspects are caught.
"My sense of safety and how comfortable I am in my own home, I can't get that back,” said Simmons.
