Detroit police say they have arrested a man following the fatal shooting of a mother on Detroit's northwest side.

According to police, 38-year-old Earl Maxwell is in custody. Police called him a "person of interest" on Monday.

Police responded to the 20000 block of Avon near Southfield and 8 Mile in northwest Detroit on Sunday afternoon.

According to officers, the victim's 14-year-old son was in the back bedroom of the home and heard arguing. Police say he then reported hearing gunshots before finding his 42-year-old mom shot dead in the living room.

Police say he saw a man driving away in a dark-colored vehicle after the shooting.
