Underground explosions blow manhole covers into the sky in Greektown

Posted

DTE Energy says an underground cable failure is to blame for manhole covers being blown into the sky in Greektown on Wednesday night.

Multiple people called 911 around 10 p.m. saying that the manhole covers were flying from the ground. One is reported to have blown as high as the 10th floor of a hotel.

Fishsbones Restaurant and The Anthenaeum Hotel were evacuated around 10:30 p.m. due to smoke filling the buildings from the explosions. All other people in Greektown were ordered to stay inside.

DTE Energy says they still have crews on the scene working to make repairs, but the evacuations have been lifted.

A spokesperson for DTE says the underground power cables are a "redundant system" and that several cables run together. That means i fone fails, the other lines still work.

She says the underground pressure caused the manhole covers to blow.

A popular restaurant and hotel were evacuated Wednesday night after explosions were heard and manhole covers were blown into the sky.

Luckily, no one was injured.
