We are a month away from the Freep Film Festival and one of the documentaries is getting a lot of buzz.

"12th and Clairmount" will premiere during opening night of the festival at the Fillmore.

It is about the Detroit riots in 1967 and, even though it's a documentary, it's told using home videos and news footage from WXYZ.

Kathy Kieliszewski is the Artistic Director for Freep Film Festival.

"Not only is it a re-telling. It is a bit of a re-education of what went down that week," she said.

Some say the event changed the city forever.

"Every time I watch it, when there is that transition from Detroit being this community to this really tumultuous event happening, I get choked up," said Kieliszewski.

The film is produced by the Free Press in collaboration with Bridge Magazine and WXYZ-TV and a group of metro Detroit cultural institutions, led by the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Video clips are woven together using 7 Action News footage and more than 450 home videos from metro Detroiters.

"Oral histories of people who lived through it, in conjunction with these home movies. So, you are going to see a film that's not going to look like any other film."

Kathy went on to say, "A lot of this stuff has never been seen before. Some of its never been seen by the people who have donated it to us because it has been sitting on 8mm reels of film that they had no ability to play until now."

The re-telling of the Detroit riots may leave viewers asking themselves - what has changed in 50 years.

"This tale of two cities. It's not a new theme," she added. "People are going to have an incredibly emotional response to this film."

Tickets for opening night for the film go on sale Friday.

The Freep Film Festival is March 30 to April 2.

The full lineup of events will be announced the beginning of next month.
