DETROIT — Several German shepherd puppies were found dumped on a highway in Michigan on Thursday.

The puppies were infected with canine parvovirus, commonly known as parvo. It's a highly contagious virus that causes an infectious gastrointestinal illness in puppies and young dogs. Without treatment, it is potentially deadly, according to the American Kennel Club.

Right now, the Lucas County Pit Crew are treating the puppies. They are currently accepting donations to help care for the animals found on I-275 near Telegraph Road.

The Monroe County Animal Shelter believes there may be more puppies abandoned in the area.
