Baton Rouge Zoo welcomes baby reticulated giraffe

Posted

A zoo in Louisiana is very excited about its newest resident.

BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo has welcomed a new baby reticulated giraffe to their herd.

On Thursday, December 26, a male calf was born to 6-year-old Rosie and 13-year-old Rowan, the zoo says.

The new baby is Rosie's first and is the 20th giraffe born at the Baton Rouge Zoo, according to a Facebook post.

The last successful giraffe birth took place at the zoo in 2001.

Reticulated giraffes, according to the zoo, are considered endangered in the wild due to human poaching and encroachment.

Staff will monitor the progress of both calf and mother over the coming days and weeks.
