Kids, school bus driver injured during crash on icy road in Washtenaw County

AUGUSTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — Several children and a school bus driver suffered minor injuries during a crash in Washtenaw County Thursday afternoon, officials said.

The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. in Augusta Township on Talladay Road near Bunton Road. The bus was bringing kids home from Lincoln Consolidated Schools.

According to Augusta Township Fire Chief David Music, the school bus slid off the road and rolled into a ditch. Music said the road was icy at the time.

The fire chief said about 12 children were injured with bumps and bruises after hitting the side of the ditch. The bus driver reported having back pain as well. About 30 students were on the bus, Lincoln Consolidated Schools said.

“He said he was going maybe 10 mph and as you can see, he just slid off the road," Music said.

The district said the bus slid while accelerating after dropping off a student.

There were no fatalities.

The intersection near the crash closed as officials responded to the scene.

Michigan State Police is investigating the crash.

In part of a statement, Lincoln Consolidated Schools said:

We are cooperating fully with authorities as they investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident. As this is an ongoing investigation, we will not be commenting further on personnel matters at this time.

The safety of our students remains our top priority. We will be reviewing all transportation safety protocols to ensure the well-being of our students and staff moving forward.
