DETROIT (WXYZ) — Emergency crews responded to a high-rise apartment fire on Friday afternoon in Detroit.

The building is located at 99 East Forest.

Detroit fire officials told us the fire was contained to one apartment.

While some residents were evacuated, others were able to stay in their apartments.

“I opened my apartment door, you couldn’t see. It was black smoke," resident Donna Lewis said.

Lewis says she lives two doors down from the apartment where the fire happened.

“The smoke was coming all... it even got up on the 14th floor," Lewis said.

Detroit Chief of Fire Operations David Nelson says four residents were taken to the hospital to be checked out and are expected to be OK.

We're told residents will be able to go back in once the fire department gives the all clear.

“The firefighters are doing a good job of getting everything cleaned up. The floors above the fire, they’re using electric fans to clear those floors out," Nelson said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
