Four people were killed and 17 were injured in a massive traffic crash along Interstate 96 near Webberville, Michigan — about 70 miles west of Detroit — late Saturday night.

Police said the deadly pileup happened just before midnight when a semi-truck with a trailer approached traffic at a standstill on the interstate but could not stop in time. The truck plowed through several vehicles in the left lane.

The impact caused the truck and several of the vehicles to catch fire, police said.

Officials said there were about 15 vehicles involved, including the truck.

The highway will remain closed in both directions until the investigation is complete and the debris is cleaned up.

Officials said traffic was stopped on I-96 for a short period of time before the crash so utility crews could work on power lines. Troopers were about to reopen the interstate when the crash happened.
