Two women died in an early morning house fire in Hazel Park, according to the fire department.
According to the Hazel Park Fire Department, a 60-year-old woman and her mother who was in her 80s are dead after the fire.
It started before 5 a.m., and Hazel Park Fire Chief Richard Story said the call came in around 5 a.m. as someone driving down 8 Mile saw smoke and turned around to call 911.
The first crews couldn’t get into the building because the flames were so intense.
When they got inside they found both victims already deceased. The woman in her 80s was on the bedroom floor where the fire started, and the woman in her 60s was found near the front door showing they were trying to get out.
Crews couldn't confirm if they had working smoke detectors, but fire officials did not hear any when they arrived at the house.
Story said smoking is likely the cause, however, the home itself had old wiring, so the official cause has not been determined.
Story also said any Hazel Park resident that needs a smoke detector can get one for free from the fire department., you just need to prove you live in Hazel Park.
