(WXYZ) — It's Sleep Awareness Week and Friday, March 17th is World Sleep Day.

World Sleep Day is an annual event, intended to be a celebration of sleep and a call to action on important issues related to sleep, including medicine, education, social aspects and driving. It is organized by the World Sleep Day Committee of the World Sleep Society and aims to lessen the burden of sleep problems on society through better prevention and management of sleep disorders.

According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one third of American adults don't get enough sleep. It suggests a regimen that limits electronics, big meals, caffeine and alcohol — but adds a little exercise during the day.

Michigan-based Majestic Beds transforms people’s restorative sleep experience with the release of new mattresses. One in three people suffer from back pain on their existing bed. The wrong mattress – including mattresses that have broken down – can adversely affect the body’s ability to recover by creating fatigue, which creates a higher sensitivity to pain and increased danger of injury.

A lack of sleep affects every aspect of a person’s health, including an increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and depression. That's why Majestic Beds founder, Alan Martens decided to get into the mattress business more than 30 years ago – to help change people’s relationship with sleep.
